A Town With Many Stories
Palazzo Adriano gained worldwide recognition when it was used as a filming location for the Academy Award–winning movie “Cinema Paradiso.” The famous scenes in the town square were filmed between the same two churches that represent its Sicilian and Albanian heritage.
Even today, some families in Arbëreshë towns continue to maintain elements of this language and identity, although Italian is now the everyday language for most people.
This makes the town a beautiful example of how history, culture, and community overlap in Sicily.
Why This Matters
The story of Palazzo Adriano shows how Sicily has long been a place where people escaping conflict could settle, bring their traditions, and become part of the island’s larger culture.
Just like Sambuca reflects Arab influence, Palazzo Adriano reflects the story of Albanian migration and cultural preservation.
Questions to Think About
- Why do you think the Albanian settlers worked hard to preserve their language and traditions?
- How might living near people from a different culture affect a town over time?
- Why do you think both churches remained important to the community?
