Sicilian Sulfer Mining was inhumane but is a part of Sicilies past. 90% of the world’s sulfer for a time in the late 1800’s came from Sicily. No machines, just humans, using a pick to break the sulfer out the mine deep below the surface. Familes were so poor they could not feed their families, so they sold their 5-8 year boys to work at the mine to haul the sulfer out of the mine. What followed was inhumane.
